Fleming Agri-Products and FNW Group are jointly wishing to recruit a Health and Safety Manager to lead and oversee all aspects of Health and Safety within the respective companies.

Fleming Agri–Products is a leading manufacturer of agricultural machinery based in Newbuilding’s, Northern Ireland. The company promotes a value for money product portfolio that is sold extensively throughout the UK and Ireland as well as several significant export markets including France, New Zealand and the USA. All manufacturing facilities are sited in Newbuilding’s with metal processing and finishing the primary activities. The majority of the 110 employees are engaged in various on site processing and administration activities with several sales territory managers based in the UK mainland.

The FNW Group of companies is based across the North of Ireland. The companies in the group are Fleming Steel, Fleming Doors and Fleming Coatings based in St. Johnston, Co. Donegal; Norwest Roofing Systems in Omagh; Limavady Roller Doors in Limavady and BES Solutions in Belfast. The group currently employs approximately 70 people. The Group has a wide ranging product offering and customer base across the island distributing steel and roofing products, providing metal finishing services (such as powder coating) and manufacturing, installing and maintaining access solutions.

The Role

The Health and Safety Manager will report to the Board of each company and will have overall responsibility for the promotion and implementation of all Health and Safety policies within each organisation. The companies combined have approximately 180 employees over 5 sites (including multiple off-site fitting and maintenance teams).

Main Job Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance to all regional Health, Safety and Environmental legislation as well as company policies and requirements for Safe Systems of Work (SSOW)
  • Manage all aspects of SSOW and coordinate and develop all risk assessments and training plans
  • Establish and implement systems for tracking and monitoring safety performance indicators
  • Actively lead implementation of legal, insurance and corporate standards
  • Ensure all employees are meeting PPE requirements and that all machine safety devices and procedures are in place and used correctly
  • Manage reporting and investigation for accidents / incidents
  • Lead HSE / HSA policy development and strategic planning within each individual site and places of work
  • Provide HSE / HSA advise specific to the business acting as a technical expert and internal consultant, directing, leading and coaching site team leaders on best practice to ensure all managers are focused on delivering a safe working environment
  • Carry out regular safety audits and address any compliance issues keeping up to date with current legislation
  • Assist with Health and Safety training, development, delivery and administration
  • Support team leaders and managers to secure meaningful employee involvement in all health and safety procedures
  • Liaise with all enforcing authorities on behalf of the company when required to do so
  • Visible presence on all workshop and work areas to aid the promotion of safety culture
  • Manage appropriate numbers of qualified first aiders
  • Ensure fire evacuation procedures comply with fire regulations
  • Lead environmental control measure and waste management systems
  • Ensure all visitors and subcontracted personnel comply with all on site H&S requirements
  • Actively manage all Health and Safety policies for all employees who drive company vehicles, including lorries, vans, forklifts and company cars
  • Take a practical and common-sense approach to developing all H&S initiatives ensuring that the work gets done in a cost effective and efficient manner

Education and Experience

The formal education and experience for this role can vary. However, the following are commonly required dependent on experience:

  • Qualification such as a diploma or degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Environmental Health
  • Preferably Nebosh qualified
  • Industry relevant Health and Safety experience
  • Knowledge of business and management principles and practices
  • Knowledge of human resource principles and practices
  • Information technology skills
